Central Park History

The colorful saga of New York’s most famous urban park

The history of Central Park in New York City is an epic tale of ambition, intrigue, and beauty. It's a story that spans the length of a century and encompasses the stories of countless people who have contributed to its development.

Central Park history

Central Park is a true New York City treasure. Located in the heart of Manhattan, this urban green space has been an integral part of the city's landscape since its inception in 1858. In the 19th century, New York was growing at an incredible rate. The city was quickly becoming one of the most important and influential in the world, and developers were looking for ways to promote and address the recreational needs of a rapidly growing population. Planned by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted as part of a more significant urban planning effort called “The Greensward Plan,” Central Park has been designated as a national historic landmark since 1963 and welcomes 42 million visitors annually.

About the Central Park Conservancy

In 1975, the Central Park Task Force was formed by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, an urban planner and writer dedicated to restoring the park and returning it to its former glory. The task force led the way for the creation of the Central Park Conservancy in 1980, a private, not-for-profit park conservancy that manages the parkland in partnership with New York City and NYC Parks. Since its founding, the Conservancy has managed to invest more than one billion dollars toward the restoration and enhancement of Central Park.
